THE WINGED LION AND THE TODARO: THE COLUMNS OF PIAZZA SAN MARCO
The two columns of Piazza San Marco, positioned at the entrance to the Marciana area etowards the pier and the basin of San Marco, are two pillars in pink marble and granite, which mark, almost like the jambs of a door, the entrance to the most beautiful square in the world.
The columns represent the two saints of Venice: San Marco Evangelista in the form of the winged lion to symbolize the Serenissima and San Todaro to protect the city.
